The Power Of The Sun - film screening, Q+A (Vista del Monte, Santa Barbara)

"The Power Of The Sun", a 56-minute educational film about the history, technology and future of solar power, narrated by John Cleese. Following the screening will be Q+A with UCSB Professor Walter Kohn, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Chemistry and featured in the film.

More important than ever in this era of rising fuel prices, photovoltaic cells generating electricity from sunlight can realistically be expected to produce as much as 25% of the world's energy in the next 30 years. New developments and materials highlighted in the film show how rising output, improved conversion efficiency and lower costs of modern solar cells are powering the developing world, off the grid. In contrast, industrialized nations have become dependent on previously cheap fossil fuels, while parking lots stand vacant and rooftops remain bare instead of being covered with solar cells, which would provide shade and deliver energy from sunshine.

This film is entertainingly informative for students, energy consumers and public policy makers about solar energy, so it can again power homes and businesses.

2:30pm socializing, 3pm meeting starts. Organized by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara, all are welcome. $2 student or $5 general donations would be appreciated. In the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off 101) in Santa Barbara.
Brooks Institute to Showcase New Photography Exhibition: Year of Rebellion, The 1970 Isla Vista Riots

Award-Winning Photographs by Joe Melchione Capture the Essence of California Youth Culture during an Unprecedented Time of Dissatisfaction and Protest

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – (June 17, 2008) – Brooks Institute is proud to showcase a new photography exhibit that juxtaposes historical images with social commentary by award-winning photographer Joe Melchione from July 15 – September 12, 2008. The public is invited to an artist’s reception on Thursday, August 7, 2008 from 5-8pm at Brooks’ Cota Street Gallery located at 27 East Cota Street in Santa Barbara.

Year of Rebellion, The 1970 Isla Vista Riots features photographs taken in Santa Barbara and Isla Vista during an unprecedented time of social unrest and outcry. The images record history through the lens of political activism, letting the viewer experience first-hand the raw emotion, idealism, passion and even empathy that characterized an explosive point in Southern California’s history. Using a photojournalistic style to capture the essence of the California youth culture’s dissatisfaction and protest, Year of Rebellion, The 1970 Isla Vista Riots is timeless in its relevance to our society today.

The exhibit’s haunting black & white images portray the extraordinary level of political radicalism and immersion in the counterculture Isla Vista experienced during three University of California, Santa Barbara student-led riots in 1970. Melchione’s photographs expose the group dynamics of forces arrayed against each other. His iconic photographs of young National Guardsmen pointing both rifles and peace signs, and students flashing looks of empowerment, sum up that turbulent era.

“The images capture what I witnessed and experienced as the momentum for change spread to an otherwise apolitical and apathetic student body,” commented Melchione. “I have tried to present them objectively, but I must admit that being involved in these events was more important than recording them. Nearly 35 years later, I am proud to say I was there as both a chronicler of -- and a participant in – history being made.”

Behind the Exhibit
During 1970, three full-scale riots took place in Isla Vista led by University of California, Santa Barbara students. The riots were initially sparked by the outrage that students felt about tenure being denied a popular, but unconventional, professor. This emotion soon ignited against the backdrop of a growing recognition of the absurdity of the Vietnam War and the nation's slow pace in providing equal rights to all citizens. During the riots, the unrest reached such extremes that the National Guard was called out and occupied the town. During the course of the rebellion, one student was killed by sheriffs' gunfire and the local Bank of America branch was burned to the ground.

About the Artist: Joe Melchione
Joe Melchione's award-winning photographs provide his viewers with the opportunity to witness a moment that they did not experience through direct, un-manipulated images. As his images reveal, his subject matter is broad, ranging from photojournalism to landscape photography. In all his work, he brings the viewer into the photograph to share the moment. Melchione is able to convey what he cannot say in words by portraying a narrative or a complex emotion within a single photograph. Reluctant to join the digital “revolution,” Melchione remains committed to film, believing that the image should be created at the time the photograph is taken and not in the lab.

Melchione received his first camera in 1969 and has been an active photographer ever since. Other than a semester of study at The Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, Melchione is self-taught. A long-time resident of Santa Monica, CA, much of his focus is on the dynamic scenery and varied lifestyles of California.
Friday, July 4th, 10am-5pm (free admission) at 2227 Garden St. (corner of Garden and Pueblo St in Santa Barbara)
For 37 years, an Art Show was held in front of the Santa Barbara Old Mission every 4th of July. Four years ago when this event was discontinued, several of the artists took it upon themselves to carry on this Santa Barbara tradition. What has resulted is an alternative site for the Art Show around the corner from The Old Mission on Garden and Pueblo streets.
Art Show enthusiasts will stroll through the show's garden setting on the grounds of the 104 year old residence in Santa Barbara's picturesque upper eastside neighborhood. The shopping atmosphere is relaxed with the lovely background of live harp music and time to talk with over fifty local, professional artisans, chosen not only for the quality of their work, but for the diversity of the show as whole. The wide variety for mediums includes jewelry, photography, paintings, pottery, sculpture, glass, clothing, handbags, dolls and more.
Please come with friends and make this show a part of your July 4th celebration. for further information, Phone Janette at 966-5104, ext. 1

Who is Legal Aid? Well...

For the past 49 years, Legal Aid Foundation has provided free legal assistance in critical civil matters. Their mission is to ensure equal and meaningful access to the civil justice system to Santa Barbara county residents living at or below the poverty level, those facing language or disability barriers, seniors and others living on fixed incomes such as Social Security, and victims of domestic violence and elder abuse. Services range from the provision of legal information and advice to assistance with the preparation of legal documents and representation in court proceedings. Because of resource limitations, the practice is primarily directed at assisting persons in crisis. They have offices in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Lompoc.

Namkha Rinpoche, an associate of the XIVth Dalai Lama, will give a free public teaching at:
La Casa de Maria
800 El Bosque Road, Santa Barbara, CA
Sunday, July 6th
-- 4-6 pm.

The public is welcome, but space is limited to 150 people. So advance registration is required. Please call La Casa de Maria at 969-5031 to reserve a sport. Donations will be appreciated.

In “Forgiveness – the Key to Resiliency” Namkha Rinpoche will explore forgiveness from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective. He will be joined in conversation by Dr. Ed Bastian, president of Spiritual Paths Foundation.

Rinpoche will share practical teachings that we in the West can learn from the tragic experience of the Tibetan peoples. He will share why forgiveness is at the heart of Buddhist practice for both spiritual and practical psychological reasons. Come learn about the practical power of forgiveness from a man whose people have been oppressed and murdered and who personally has been forced into exile. Together we will explore how the Buddhist practice of forgiveness can help all of us achieve internal peace, reconciliation with others and the common good for all beings.

The talk will be followed by a blessing by the Rinpoche.

Namkha Rinpoche is in the lineage of the XIVth Dalai Lama and works closely with His Holiness sharing the wisdom and teachings of Tibetan Buddhism and the story of the Tibetan people. He shares with the XIVth Dalai Lama the goal of teaching world peace through peace of mind, compassion and mutual respect between religions. Rinpoche will also share the hopeful work being done in Tibet to protect and preserve their culture. There will be an opportunity to donate to these humanitarian projects.

This conversation is the second in a quarterly series of “Conversations for the Common Good” sponsored by La Casa de Maria. Each “Conversation” will focus on a theme or issue that is important to the well being of the community. In September we will be exploring Healthcare.

This program is co-sponsored by La Casa de Maria and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.

More about the Rinpoche’s Visit

“Namkha Rinpoche is coming here to give Buddhist teachings and additionally speak about the humanitarian projects that are underway in Tibet: schools for the children being built; hospitals under construction, care for the elderly and the necessity for rebuilding several Tibetan monasteries,” says his tour organizer and Santa Barbara resident, Marguerite Gaffney.

According to supporters, the life of Namkha Rinpoche mirrors the story of Tibet and its people. He grew up living a nomadic life-style in Tibet. Now, at the age of 40, he “dedicates his life to preserving the unique riches of Tibetan Buddhist tradition and passing it on to the Western world.”

“Namkha Rinpoche works closely with HH the Dalai Lama and has always wanted to serve His Holiness' main goals, among which the improvement of the Tibetan people's living conditions and the development of world peace through peace of mind, as well as mutual respect between religions.”

The event at La Casa will be the culmination of a 17-day West Coast speaking tour.

Other public events in Santa Barbara include the following teachings:
• “Cultivating Compassion” @ The Center of the Heart Church (487 N. Turnpike Road)--July 1 7:30-8:30 PM
• “Understanding the Pain, Body & Healing Ceremony” @ SB Dance Arts Performance Space – July 3, 7-9:00 P.M.
• “Green Tara Teaching and Instruction” @t Yoga Soup (28 Parker Way) -- July 5 7:30 – 9:30 PM.

On Saturday morning Namkha Rinpoche will hold a special session with the young people at Los Prietos Boys Academy between 10-12 AM. This is not open to the public.

For more information contact Marguerite Gaffney (805) 964 7836 or visit namkha.org for complete speaking tour dates.

Biography of Namkha Rinpoche

Namkha Rinpoche was born in Kham in 1968, in one of the most remote areas of Tibet. At a very young age, he showed signs of being a reincarnated Buddhist teacher (tulku). Despite the very strong Chinese repression against any religious activity, Rinpoche’s father –he an experienced and respected lama– managed to secretly provide him with the deep Buddhist and yogic education a reincarnated lama is supposed to receive. Thus he studied texts, learnt the art of Tibetan rituals, reflected and meditated on compassion and on the nature of mind. As a teenager, Rinpoche studied with the wisest lamas of Eastern Tibet at the time. He also spent seven years in solitary retreat, the first part in a monastery, the second in a cave, completely isolated.

In 1991, as the Chinese oppression against Buddhist had slightly weakened, Rinpoche was recognised by H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (foremost lama of the 20’s century and teacher of H.H. the Dalai Lama himself). Rinpoche was also recognised in 2001 by Domang Yangthang Rinpoche and Pema Norbu Rinpoche (highest authority of the Ancient Tibetan Buddhist tradition at the time).

Then, in 1998, as Namkha Rinpoche was quite renowned a Buddhist teacher nearby Lhasa, he organised prayer festivals for the longevity of H.H. the Dalai Lama, despite the dangers of Chinese suppression that any religious manifestation in favour of HH the Dalai Lama entails. At some point, Rinpoche was informed by one of his relatives who worked for the Chinese police, that he was about to be imprisoned. Therefore, he had no choice but to flee to Nepal, crossing the Himalayas by foot.

Since his exile, Rinpoche has mainly dedicated himself to teach Westerners. He now lives in Switzerland where he has founded 3 dharma centres. So far, he has opened centres in Holland, Spain, Lithuania and Sweden. Rinpoche is greatly appreciated by his students for the way he tirelessly makes himself available for them and helps them realise qualities of wisdom, peace of mind and compassion through Buddhism. Rinpoche is the head of numerous humanitarian and cultural preservation projects in Tibet, India and Nepal.

Since Rinpoche left Tibet, he has always worked closely with H.H. the Dalai Lama and his government. Rinpoche is an old friend of Lodi Gyari Rinpoche, special envoy of H.H. the Dalai Lama in Washington D.C. and representative of His Holiness in the current negotiations with the highest Chinese authorities. Rinpoche has always wanted to follow His Holiness’ advice and to serve the main goals set up by His Holiness, among which the improvement of the living conditions of the Tibetan people and the development of world peace through peace of mind and mutual respect between religions. This loyalty to His Holiness’ work and view is now rewarded as His Holiness has accepted Rinpoche’s invitation to teach in Switzerland in 2009.

Rinpoche’s main visions and projects are of two kinds. The first is to work for the preservation of Tibetan culture and religious tradition. In brief, it is to help Tibetans survive the massive oppression they have endured for 50 years. The troubles endured by Tibetan people are some of the toughest in the history of mankind. The Chinese Cultural Revolution wanted to annihilate Tibetan culture and religion and as a result about one million out of the six million Tibetans have lost their lives since the Chinese invasion. It is only thanks to Tibetan people’s willpower, and thanks to the depth and power of the thousand years old Tibetan Buddhist tradition, with His Holiness the Dalai Lama natural charisma and compassion shining all over the world, that Tibetans can still exist as a nation, although it is still deeply endangered.

Rinpoche’s other project is to create an International Buddhist institute in Switzerland. As many lamas, Rinpoche recognises westerners’ strong interest in the study and practice of Buddhism. This makes them the possible missing link in passing on the so endangered Tibetan tradition. He therefore wishes to create a centre of study, practice and retreat that will be a stronghold of Tibetan wisdom in the very centre of Europe, based on the idea, so dear to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, that world peace can only come through the development of inner peace and compassion.

Free film screening - "Gag The Whistleblower" (Santa Barbara Library - Faulkner Gallery)

The actual title of this documentary film is "Kill The Messenger", however Sibel Edmonds is - very fortunately - still alive.

Soon after 9/11/2001, Sibel Edmonds was a translator of Middle-Eastern languages for the FBI, when she was solicited by a co-worker to join a ring of spies and arms dealers. She reported the strange and inappropriate proposal to her supervisors, who did nothing.

She reported what was going on to FBI bosses, who fired her despite federal whistleblower protections. Next, Sibel went to two US Senators in Washington, on the Senate Intelligence Committee, who confirmed what she was saying, then she and everyone else involved were slapped with gag-orders by the Ashcroft Justice Department, on the grounds of "National Security".

Since then, Sibel Edmonds has become "the most gagged person in US history", forbidden from talking about her case, even in court hearings to try and get her job back. In one bizarre "Star Chamber" ruling, Sibel and her ACLU attorneys were expelled from the courtroom, unable to present her case. Government lawyers were permitted to argue their side of the case in secret, without cross-examination or rebuttal.

This powerful, 84-minute film, made in France in 2006, exposes the corrupt and criminal Bush-Cheney administration all the way back to before 9/11. Most of the dialog is in English, with subtitles for only a few short sections.
